Happy National Small Business Week! Don't Miss These 5 Exciting Events

There’s no use in sugarcoating it; running a small business can be tough. According to research from the University of Tennessee, here’s why so many small businesses fail:

While small business insurance can help mitigate unforeseen disasters and accidents, lack of experience in your industry or managing your team requires you to take ownership over what you do and don’t know.

If the last time you brushed up on your business theory was during college, it’s time for a refresher! Likewise, if you’ve been slacking on growing your network and keeping up with commercial current events, this is your reminder to re-engage for the sake of your company. No person is an island, and that’s especially true for entrepreneurs. The best thing you can do for your business is continually learn from others.

There’s good news for eager entrepreneurs looking to get involved: National Small Business Week (NSBW) kicks off April 30 through May 6. Here are five exciting events you won’t want to miss, whether you participate in person or tune in for the live webcast.

Monday, May 1
Start NSBW off on a high note with the annual awards luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET. Find out who will win the coveted National Small Business Person of the year—from presenter Linda McMahon, no less—as well as winners for niche categories like Exporter and Contractor of the year.

You can watch the lunch and awards ceremony from the comfort of your own office, and chime in using #SmallBusinessWeek on Twitter.

Tuesday, May 2
Looking for some tried-and-true advice on how to start and grow a business? Then the Facebook Live “fireside” session with Linda McMahon (U.S. Small Business Administration) and Erin Egan (Facebook Vice President and Chief Privacy Officer for Policy).

It is sure to be chock full of tips, and you can submit your most pressing questions in the hopes they’ll be answered live! Head to the SBA’s Facebook page at 11:30 a.m. ET to watch.

Wednesday, May 3
NSBW hits the road, heading to Indianapolis to hear from real business owners in the IndyCar town! If you’re nowhere near the Midwest, you can watch it all live between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. ET.

Thursday, May 4
Next stop: Arlington, TX. One highlight will be Linda McMahon talking to local business owners like Sherill Lester. As the president of QMF Steel, Sherill made a name for herself in the male-dominated industry of steel manufacturing.

As with the other events, tune in live through Facebook or the SBA’s website between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. CT. Keep the conversation alive on Twitter using #SmallBusinessWeek.

Friday, May 5
Nothing says “TGIF” like ending the tour in the agricultural hotbed of Fresno, CA. Highlights include a chat with the founder of Ruiz Foods and the CEO of Borga Steel.

If you’re in the area, you can attend the event (for free) with advance registration. If you’re not, the Internet is your friend. Tune in live between 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. PT.

Enjoy this action-packed week that’s all about you and your peers. Growing your small business is no walk in the park, but it can be rewarding beyond measure.
