Auto Insurance For Dui And Speeding Tickets

Speeding tickets and DUIs are the bane of any driver’s record. Not only do you have to go through the anxiety of having to face the officer that is knocking on your car window, you will also be faced with higher insurance premiums in the upcoming years. In the case of a DUI, you may also face the consequence of having your driver’s license revoked - up to 2 years for your first conviction depending on the state you reside in.

Throughout the country, the impact of a DUI to car insurance premiums is much bigger when compared to a speeding ticket. Have you ever wondered how speeding tickets are equivalent to a single DUI charge, in terms of insurance premiums? Many consumers may guess that a DUI is equivalent to at least two speeding tickets. However, to our surprises, after analyzing our proprietary data, CoverHound found no clear trend in the number of speeding tickets that are equivalent to a DUI.

Increase in Rates for a DUI

Note: Insurance rate increases cited in the study above are based on the lowest rates for Basic Coverage across all carriers at coverhound.com, for a hypothetical shopper profile of a single and currently employed, 30-year-old male who is not a homeowner, continuously insured for 4 years and drives the vehicle he owns (paid in full) for an average of 6,000 miles a year.

Across the carriers that returned rates for the shopper profile in our analysis, if you are convicted with a DUI, the insurance premiums could increase from 16.13% up to 90.78%. The level of rate increase highly depends on the carrier, the state you are in, and your individual profile including age, marital status, etc.

Comparison Shopping

If you are slammed with speeding tickets or DUIs, be sure to consider insurance comparison shopping because you might find a new carrier that will provide you with a more affordable annual premium, even with the charges on your driving record. When you have a major driving incident, don’t just assume your current carrier will offer you the best rate, disregarding the number of years you have insured with them.

It is important to remember to be responsible drivers and avoid making mistakes, lest the negative impact on your insurance premiums. Consider insurance comparison shopping with CoverHound, and we we will be glad to assist you in finding the right policy for you.
