CoverHound's Summer Road Trip Tips

Ahh, summertime! Isn’t it just the best? You know what’s even better? A summer road trip. Just imagine it now---the windows down, the sunroof open and that perfect summer song as your soundtrack. We all love a great road trip, and being prepared can make for a smooth journey. Here are CoverHound's tips to make your trip stress free.

Map Your Route

Summer is the most common season for road work and detours, so be prepared and plan your driving route to avoid surprises and being stuck in traffic for extended periods of time. Standstill traffic is the worst!

Have a GPS System

Whether it is built into your car, or you need to download an app, have a GPS system ready to go and familiarize yourself with it beforehand. My favorite is Apple Maps on my iphone.

Pre-Trip Car Maintenance

  • Check the air in your tires.
  • Fuel up before you hit the road.
  • Check oil and other fluid levels and fill where necessary.
  • Check wiper blades (summer is the time for rain) and replace if needed.
  • Wash your car, or at least your windows for clear visibility.
  • Check your headlights, especially if you’ll be driving at night.

  • Pack a car phone charger

You need to keep a full charge on your cell in case of emergencies, so you can call for help if you get a flat tire or need any other car maintenance. Plus, you’ll want to find nearby gas stations, food or anything else at a moment’s notice.

  • Have an Emergency Kit

An emergency kit is for worst case scenarios, so you likely won’t need to use it, but you’ll find comfort knowing it's there. You’ll want to have:

  • Flares

  • Flashlight and batteries

  • Medical kit

  • Small fire extinguisher

  • Jumper cables

  • Also, always carry cash in case of tolls and pack snacks and water, especially for driving through more remote locations. You never know when your next stop will be.

    Car Insurance

You knew it was coming. Make sure you have auto insurance and that you carry your id cards with you---especially in case there is an accident, you’ll want to have all your information handy.

    Bring great music!

Ok, so maybe great music isn’t essential for your safety, but it is key to having a good time on the open road! Plus, if you make great playlists, you won’t be distracted by choosing your music, and less distractions are always a good thing.
